Making wine more traceable: inside WATSON’s latest pilot demo

WATSON

On June 26th, 2025, the Watson project took part in the Synergy Day on Robotics and IoT for Smart Precision Viticulture, hosted by our partner INESC TEC at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in Vila Real (Portugal).

With nearly 100 attendees, the event brought together researchers, innovators, industry professionals and other key stakeholders to explore how robotics, sensors and data technologies are transforming viticulture and boosting transparency, traceability and sustainability in the wine sector.

Demonstrating smart solutions for the wine supply chain

As part of the agenda, Watson participated in a dedicated demonstration session showcasing the cutting-edge IoT solutions being tested within the project’s wine pilot.

During the demonstration, attendees had the opportunity to experience the following technologies developed and integrated by Watson:

  • MOXOH: a system for early detection of pests and diseases that detects and monitors insects’ populations, while identifying potential threats.

  • SharpMetriX: a tool for productivity mapping and data collection during harvest, helping producers optimise yield and field management.

  • Cropsign: a solution that monitors vegetation indexes and physicochemical parameters of wine, offering valuable insights for quality control.

  • Tracker: a grape transportation traceability system, ensuring transparency and real-time monitoring from the vineyard to the winery.

These tools form a key part of Watson’s broader efforts to build interoperable, secure and efficient traceability frameworks that support producers, consumers and food safety authorities alike.

Connecting technology and tradition

This demo session provided an opportunity to connect scientific innovation with the real-world needs of the Portuguese wine industry.

Participants engaged in dynamic discussions about the benefits of precision viticulture and the importance of trust, transparency and traceability in global food value chains.

The Watson wine use case, supported by the active participation of local stakeholders such as Sogrape Vinhos, continues to show how technology can strengthen traditional industries, driving forward more informed, efficient and sustainable practices.

Stay tuned as we continue to advance our mission of building smarter, safer and more transparent food systems!
