Food Fraud Incidents Application
A powerful tool to track and prevent food fraud
Since 2016, the Knowledge Centre for Food Fraud and Quality (KC-FFQ) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) has published monthly food fraud reports. These reports are based on the European Media Monitor, which collects data from around 17,000 media sources in 190 countries worldwide.
Now, in support of the Watson project, the JRC has compiled 1,892 food fraud incidents up to 31 August 2025, listed in the food fraud reports since 2016 into a single dataset, and developed an interactive application that makes this information easier to explore and analyse.
KEY FEATURES OF THE APPLICATION
The Food Fraud Incidents Application allows users to:
Filter incidents by time, location, product category, PDO/PGI status and type of fraud;
Identify patterns and trends across regions and food categories;
Assess risks of specific fraud types such as grey market activity or counterfeiting;
Support decision-making with evidence-based insights.
This tool transforms snapshots from media reports into dynamic insights that can help anticipate and prevent future fraud.
BENEFITS FOR OUR STAKEHOLDERS
The application is designed for policy makers, industry, researchers and consumers. It helps to:
Pinpoint vulnerable areas in the agri-food chain;
Improve fraud prevention strategies;
Strengthen consumer and business confidence;
Support better policy design and enforcement.
Always up to date
The dataset behind the application will be continuously updated with new cases, ensuring stakeholders always have access to the latest information on food fraud.
